Lake Minnewanka or “Water of the Spirits” to the Indigenous Stoney People, is the second longest lake in the Canadian Rockies. That I am moved by the strange winter beauty of the frozen methane bubbles seems odd to me, since to create the lake we see today, in 1895, 1912 and 1941, three dams were built, raising the water levels by over 100 feet and not only submerging much of the archeology from over 10, 000 years of habitation but also an entire village, causing involuntary resettlement by local inhabitants. It seems to me that this iconic lake must contain stories yet untold, which like the bubbles, are still frozen in time and waiting to be set free. A hauntingly beautiful photograph taken in Banff National Park by Paul Zizka inspired me to create this painting.
